Elizabeth Rojas Hernandez
Elizabeth, “Liz” Rojas Hernandez, was raised in Mexico City and now lives in the state of Oaxaca where her mother’s family is originally from. Like many families with Oaxacan origins, her maternal family made its living creatively. Her grandfather was a talented jeweler, and her grandmother was an accomplished cook in the famous Oaxacan tradition. Liz’s love for the Oaxacan culture was cultivated in her by her grandparents through the flavors, textures, and customs that permeated her childhood.
At an early age she developed impeccable skills as a seamstress, making clothes for her dolls and working with oil and acrylic paints. When Liz moved to Oaxaca permanently at the age of eighteen, she began to make artisanal clothing using natural dyes and fabrics, as well as jewelry she created from paper mâché, wood and plants. Her mediums reflect a strong relationship with the natural environment that is common among indigenous people of this region.
Simultaneously, she began painting in earnest, and found her current passion for creating portraits of children. Liz is honored to be able to ensure her artistic ancestral legacy endures through her work, and to share it with the world.
