How to Care for Your Treasure

Congratulations! You are now a steward of an ancient creative Mexican tradition. Please take a moment to review the care instructions for the type of item you have purchased to ensure it retains its qualities and lasts a long time.

  • Do not wash your clay pottery with soap or put it in the dishwasher. If there is no grease, you can just rinse it with boiling water. If there is grease, put 1 tsp. of baking soda or salt in a cup of boiling water and use a dish brush to clean the vessel. RInse with boiling water. Air dry or dry with a cloth.

    Store your clay pottery in a cool dark area that is free from constant humidity. Constant humidity will result in cracking over time. Cracks can be repaired by soaking the pottery in water for 8 hours, smoothing over the crack, then air drying. Do not dry the pottery directly in the sun.

    Clay ceramics can be plazed directly over an open flame and are often what they are designed for. This will result in discoloration that adds to its rustic qualities.

    Clay is not microwave safe. Do not microwave it!

  • Glazed ceramics may be washed with soap and water but not placed int he dishwasher or microwave.

    Green barro/pottery from Atzompa contains lead glaze and is not safe for consumption of food.

  • Since Tonalli textiles including rugs and tapestries/tapetes, rebozos, and clothing are handmade and colored with natural materials, it is best to dry clean them at a green dry cleaner. Harsh dry cleaning hchemicals and machine washilg will damage these items.

    If handwashing, use cold water and a cleanser made for delicate fabrics. One that is free from chemicald is best. Air dry yotr treasure in an area free from direct sunlight.

  • Handwoven cotton tablecloths/m,teles placemats, napkins, curtains, bedspreads, pillow covers

    Tela/cotton textiles may be washed with cold water on a delicate cycle using a gentle natural soap. Air dry out of direct sunlight.

  • Unpainted hojalata can be washed by hand with soapy water if dried immediately with a soft dry cloth.

    Not dishwasher or microwave safe.

  • Woven palm purses, bags, figurines and baskets can be dusted witd a dry cloth or cleaned more thoroughly with a wet soapy cloth.

    Air dry. If the item contains dyes, dry in a warm area free from direct sunlight.

  • Masks and Figurines: Clean with a dry cloth or a soft cloth for dustiDg. For more deep cleanong you can wipe with a soft cloth moistened with a little bit of murphy’s Oil Soap.

    Do not use chemical wocd polishes which will discolor the wood and potentially strip the paint.

    Utensils: Wash by hand with soapy water and rinse. Air dry. Extreme heat from dishwasher or microwave will damage this item.
